Sandwich-Related Injuries

I cut my finger while making a sandwich last night. It was my middle finger. It was a butter knife. It wasn't that bad.

This isn't my first sandwich-related injury. In high school, I pulled my right bicep cutting a sandwich in half. When I worked at Jersey Mike's, I sliced off the tip of my index finger by being inattentive around the meat slicer. On the list of sandwich-related injuries, this one ranks pretty low. Right above slipping on some mayo and bruising my knee.

This sandwich injury is an inconvenience though. I had to wrap the finger with gauze to absorb all of the blood gushing out (fingers just love to bleed, don't they?). I have a big ball of gauze on top of my finger. It looks like a tiny hat. Like my finger is a sultan. Or a sous chef.

It's a cute fashion statement for my finger, but it makes it hard to type. Have you ever tried to type using only 90% of your digits? You make dumb typos like "habe" instead of "have" or "tsksing" instead of "taking." You're essentially typing with an Eastern European accent.

I tried typing without the finger hat, but then the wound reopened and I bled all over the keys. It's like that old Hemingway quote. I'm writing, you guys!

I've been forced to slow down my typing considerably though. It's either that or write lide thib. And it's pretty frustrating.

When I write, my mind jumps from topic to topic like that golden retriever in that dog show video I'm sure you've all seen. I've trained my fingers to type at a relatively quick pace just so that they can keep up with my thoughts (I'd make a pretty deece court stenographer, btw). This finger hat is mucking things up. My fingers are now two and a half thoughts behind. I have to be Usher. Nice and slow.

I thought of a cool transition here, but I already forgot it because of my stupid finger. Do you see what I mean?!

Anyway, it's kind of ok because I've recently taken up writing in notebooks. Like by hand. With a pen. It's SUPER slow. And I get hand cramps. But it forces me to slow down and really think about what I'm writing.

It's interesting looking at the process of writing on a computer versus on paper. In my notebooks, I have a lot of little chunks of writing. It's easier to organize my thoughts because I'm forced to slow down. On a computer, it's a free-for-all, but it's also easier to flesh out thoughts and ideas.

I usually feel more accomplished after writing on paper because, even if none of what I wrote is useable, it's tangible proof that I wrote. Evidence of industry. This is the process. If nothing I write in a text doc is useable, I delete everything and I'm left staring at a blank screen and a blinking cursor, thinking "I'm worthless what am I doing why am I so bad OH GOD."

The finger hat technique is a happy medium. I can't go crazy fast, but it helps with thinking things through. Plus, I got this wicked scar on my finger now. Seriously, it looks really cool and y'all should be jealous.

The sandwich was delicious, by the way. A nice, juicy ribeye sandwich.

Although it was a little too bloody (ba-dum-psh).
